There’s a new ‘Sower’ in town and his name is Tyrease Holder.
The 17-year-old dished out his second consecutive ‘double sow’ when the Hope for the Ghetto road tennis tournament continued at the Belfield courts on Wednesday night.
Holder, the nephew of women’s road tennis champion Kim Holder, was brutal in his 21-7, 21-7 destruction of Horace Beckles, to advance to the round of 32.
It followed Holder’s 21-9, 21-9 demolition of Fernando ‘Short Man’ Burgess last Saturday in his opening match.
Last night also produced one of the biggest upsets to date, as Julian ‘Ju Ju’ Collymore knocked out pre-tournament favourite Adrian Scott in straight sets 21-14, 21-15.
Scott never settled into a rhythm and found himself in an early 1-9 hole in the first game.
Collymore, on the other hand, was at his defensive best, turning back every attempt by his attacking-minded opponent, which forced him into numerous errors.
Like a carbon copy of the opening set, Collymore rushed out to an early lead in the second game.
The game featured several lengthy rallies as Scott subdued his attack and settled into a more defensive style of play. However, despite a valiant effort, he could not find a way to crack a tiring Collymore’s solid defense.
Veteran Simon Bayne could consider himself lucky to be in the last 32 after snatching victory from the jaws of defeat against Akeil Harrison.
With the best-of-three set tied at 1-1, Bayne looked to be on his way out of the tournament when he found himself trailing (3-12) and (5-15) against Harrison in the third and deciding game.
With victory in sight, the inexperienced Harrison became overly aggressive in an attempt to finish off his opponent.
A series of mistakes allowed Bayne back into the game (13-17) and he eventually locked the scores at 18 before going on to win the game and the match 21-13, 18-21, 21-18.
Three other youngsters also booked their spots in the next round with dominant victories over veteran opponents.
Azarie Clarke was in a no-nonsense mood in dispatching Andrew Grandison 21-9, 21-16, and Jaden Mayers defeated Carl ‘War Machine’ Harewood 21-14, 21-16.
Schoolboy tennis champion Kenoja Belgrave also advanced after his opponent Roy ‘Schoolboy’ Rivellac did not turn up.
